In April of 2021, the UNESCO Executive Board approved by unanimity the proposal to create an International Geodiversity Day. More than 70 countries co-sponsored this proposal, which is a sign of the remarkable support is has from all continents. This Day will enable coordinated activities to take place worldwide, highlighting the importance of geodiversity. Bringing together people, communities, organisations, and countries across the world, it is expected that this will include educational, awareness raising, and public and policy engagement activities.
It is expected that the first International Geodiversity Day (IGD) will be on October 6th 2022.
The scientific proposers of IGD have decided that the Day needs an emblem to give greater visibility. Thus, they hold this competition to choose the best emblem for this special Day.
1. Conditions of Participation
The competition is open to all who are younger than 30 years old on July 31st 2021. The candidates participate in their private and personal capacity. Proposals from minors must be submitted by a person have legal responsibility for them. The Organizers encourage proposals from all regions of the world.

2. Selection Criteria
The emblem should satisfy the following requirements:
A - Basic Criteria
- Symbolize the importance of geodiversity
- Not be offensive to any sensitivities, be they of national, cultural, or religious character;
B - Conceptual Criteria for Appreciation
- Pertinence and relevance for all regions of the world
- Quality and originality of the visual presentation
- Aesthetic value
C - Formal Criteria for Appreciation
- Readability and immediate identification
- Easiness of exploitations, transposition, and adaptation (in particular for electronic media, use in colour and in black and white)
The winner will be chose by an international panel of judges, the names of which will be published on the website.
3. Submission of Proposals
The proposals should be submitted before 17:00 GMT on July 31st 2021
Proposals are to be submitted via the dedicated online form, with the elements attached in TIFF, JPEG, or PDF format and should not exceed 10 MB. Proposals can only be accepted via this form.
Participants are required to submit their proposal together with information including their name, country, and email. The proposal itself should under no circumstance indicate any of these details, nor any information on the age, gender, or national origin of the participant.
Participants submitting an emblem within this competition certify and warrants that the proposal does not violate the rights of any third party or any copyright.

4. Technical Format of Proposals
Each participant may present a single proposal, to be submitted via the online submission form. As submitted the emblem should fill about 2/3 of the space of an A4 page, although it will of course often be used in a smaller size.
Any proposal that does not satisfy the conditions of participation will not be considered.

6. Intellectual Property Rights
The winner grants to the Organizers, and any successor International Geodiversity Day organization, a non-exclusive, worldwide, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and perpetual license to use the design.
By the submission of a proposal, the participant authorizes the use of their proposal for the purposes of public information, for example to publish the results of the competition in spoken, written, and electronic media, with the name of the creator, and to exhibit and publish the submitted projects or some of them anywhere in the world.
All of the submitted proposals that are not selected remain the intellectual property of their creators, unless otherwise agreed in writing.
